Here is some information from the UK’s Index of Deprivation:

The Index of deprivation 2019 is comprised of seven distinct domains of deprivation which, when combined and appropriately weighted. They are;

• Income (22.5%)
• Employment (22.5%)
• Health Deprivation and Disability (13.5%)
• Education, Skills Training (13.5%)
• Crime (9.3%)
• Barriers to Housing and Services (9.3%)
• Living Environment (9.3%)

People may be considered to be living in poverty if they lack the financial resources to meet their needs, whereas people can be regarded as deprived if they lack any kind of resources, not just income.

Where:

Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Knowsley, Kingston upon Hull and Manchester are the local authorities with the highest proportions of neighbourhoods among the most deprived in England.

Middlesbrough and Blackpool rank as the most deprived districts regarding income deprivation among children

Shiva Trust Agenda

The Shiva Trust agenda is designed to improve life chances for children through the provision of  Education, Skills Training (13.5%), and is targeted around area’s of deprivation. The reason for this is that child poverty can have negative effects on children’s health, social and emotional wellbeing and education. It also continues the cycle of poverty.

The effects of child poverty include:

• Low birth weight (200g lower than affluent counterparts)
• Poor physical health (linked to chronic conditions and obesity)and poor health later in life
• Mental health problems / low sense of wellbeing
• Experience of stigma and bullying from peers
• Academic underachievement
• Detrimental effects on executive functioning
• Developmental delays
• Research shows more likelihood of entering into crime later in life
